The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations 2013 (Directive 2012/19/EU) apply to all Electrical and Electronic Equipment placed on the market in the UK covered by the scope of the Regulations.
The directive aims to reduce the waste arising from Electrical and Electronic Equipment and improve the environmental performance of everything involved in the life cycle and to minimise the amount of material entering this waste process.
In order to comply with the WEEE directive CMS Ltd have taken the following actions:
- CMS Ltd carry out detailed reporting to determine how much WEEE has been sold in the UK market each quarter year in each category.
- All equipment entering the UK market, as well as carrying a unique serial number, is marked with the crossed-out wheelie bin.
- This symbol indicates that the equipment carrying this mark must not be thrown into general waste but should be collected separately and properly processed for disposal under local regulations.
- Reports are submitted to the relevant authority with information of the tonnage of WEEE products placed into the UK market in each category by CMS Ltd.
- We provide an end-of-life solution for all products sold within the UK by accepting back any end-of-life WEEE for processing by a local registered waste disposal company.
The WEEE directive has been transposed into each EU member state's legislation and so the exact details will vary slightly from country to country, but the above principals will apply. In particular, the arrangements for the separate collection of WEEE will vary in each country but might include for example; public collection points. The directive encourages reuse, recycling and other forms of recovery in order to prevent WEEE.
CMS Ltd fully support this aim by reusing and recycling where possible.
Customers also play an important role in reducing WEEE and helping the environment by disposing of WEEE properly.
Recycling your Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment WEEE
Under the WEEE Regulations, all new electrical and electronic goods should now be marked with the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol.
Goods marked with this symbol should be disposed of separately from normal household waste so that they can be recycled.
Electrical and Electronic Equipment is the UK’s fastest growing type of waste. If such equipment is not recycled or reused, it ends up in landfill sites which is not good for the environment.
Many electrical and electronic items which we throw away can be reused, repaired or recycled. This helps to save our natural finite resources and also reduces the environmental and health risks associated with sending these goods to landfill.
Where you purchase any electrical or electronic product from us (whether through one of our stores, through our Customer Service team or online from our website), we will take back free of charge, on a one for one basis, any equivalent electrical or electronic product. For example, if you purchase an electric steam steriliser, we will take back your old electric steam steriliser. The product you return for recycling need not have been purchased from us. We are not, however, obliged to take back any product which is not equivalent or similar to the new product you are purchasing. The old product must be returned to us within 28 days of the purchase of the new product.
If, having purchased an electrical or electronic item from CMS you wish to return any equivalent electrical or electronic product for recycling, please contact our Customer Service Team and we will provide you with instructions as to how to do so. All items returned to us are recorded and disposed of as required by the Regulations.
